Scenario 1: Not Receiving Verification Codes (SMS or Email)
Step 1: Check Signal and Network
- Ensure your phone has a strong signal and is not in airplane mode.
- Try restarting your phone.
Step 2: Check Spam or Promotions Folder (for email codes)
- Sometimes, codes sent to your recovery email may land in the Spam or Promotions folder.
Step 3: Try a Different Method
- On the verification screen, click “Try another way”.
- Google may offer:
- Backup codes
- Authenticator app
- Prompt on another device
- Recovery email
Scenario 2: Lost Phone or Device
Step 1: Go to Google Account Recovery
- Visit: https://accounts.google.com/signin/recovery
Step 2: Enter Your Email
- Type your email and click Next.
Step 3: Click “Try another way”
- Keep clicking this until you see an option like:
- Use backup codes
- Send to recovery email
- Verify your identity
Step 4: Use Backup Codes (if saved)
- If you saved backup codes earlier, use one to sign in.
Step 5: Use a Trusted Device
- If you’ve signed in on another device before, Google may send a prompt there.
Step 6: Fill Out the Recovery Form
- If all else fails, Google will ask you to verify your identity by answering questions about your account.
Scenario 3: Authenticator App Not Working or Lost
Step 1: Try Other Verification Methods
- On the 2SV screen, click “Try another way”.
- Choose:
- SMS code
- Backup codes
- Recovery email
Step 2: Reinstall or Reconfigure Authenticator
- If you still have access to the device:
- Reinstall the Google Authenticator app.
- Use the QR code or key from your Google account settings to re-link it.
Step 3: Use Backup Codes
- If you saved them, use one to log in.
Step 4: Account Recovery
- If you can’t access any method, go to:
- https://accounts.google.com/signin/recovery
Prevent Future Lockouts
- Add multiple recovery options: phone, email, and trusted devices.
- Print or save backup codes: https://myaccount.google.com/security
- Use Google Prompt: Easier and more secure than SMS or Authenticator.
